Countdown To Best Job In The World

Yesterday, my client Tourism Queensland announced the Top 50 finalists for the destination’s highly-coveted Island Caretaker position, a.k.a The Best Job In The World.

As the phenomenal media and public response continues, I can’t help thinking about my good fortune in being part of such a groundbreaking campaign – one that will culminate in a once in a lifetime experience for the successful candidate.

Nearly 35,000 people from across the globe have applied for the six-month $100k gig on Queensland’s Hamilton Island. The amazing response has been especially fun for me, since I got to experience first hand in January the majesty and excitement of the Islands of The Great Barrier Reef.

Best Job has been such a hit across all media – from The Today Show to Twitter – that it’s redefined viral marketing and reminded me how, in this post-Facebook landscape, we’re all separated by a lot less than six degrees.

One of my best friends from the UK, Eva, shot the 60-second application video for a friend of hers. She didn’t make the Top 50, but it turns out that a fellow publicist (and blogger) I’ve worked with many times, Angelene Orth, did.

The Most Important PR Campaign Ever

In the course of my four+ years in travel PR, I’ve had the good fortune of working on some groundbreaking campaigns.

From Starwood Caribbean’s award-winning Procreation Vacation package (named by yours truly) to Tourism Queensland’s current global phenomenon, Best Job In The World, these initiatives have taught me the tremendous value of getting your message out to as broad an audience as possible.

Now, inspired by friend and colleague Carla, I’ve decided to apply my PR savvy to a more personal objective — finding Mr. Right.

When it comes to PR, the best ideas are often the simplest ones and so, I’m forgoing stunts in favor of deploying good old fashioned word of mouth to achieve my goal.

Who Should I date? You tell me!

I’ve already taken a few steps in this direction, putting friends, family and business associates on notice that I’m open to matchmaking attempts. Now, I’m asking you, dear readers, to play Cupid and answer the question — who do you think I should date? Do you know a great guy — or know someone who might know one — that’s single and looking?

When it comes to bachelors, I don’t necessarily have a physical type. As I once told FoxNews.com, I’ve dated everything from short and balding to tall and muscular. I do have a few prerequisites, though. Here they are:

Age range: 35-45
Zip code: Anywhere in the tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT)
Must Haves: Intelligence, spirituality, ambition, a well-worn passport
Dealbreakers: Cats, dogs, small kids, no sense of humor
Optional: Enjoys Scrabble, concerts and a good meal

A Swanky France Tourism Soirée

Last night, I headed down for a cocktail reception at Robert DeNiro’s Tribeca Grill hosted by France Tourism.

Attending swanky events is definitely one of the perks of working in PR and France Tourism knows how to throw a truly first-class affair.

In addition to a generous selection of Champagne and French wines, last night’s reception offered a bountiful spread of cheeses, breads, and passed hors d’oeuvres that included brie cheese encrusted beef, mini potato and cheese strudels along with bite-sized desserts ranging from chocolate concoctions to Tirami Su.

The well-attended soirée featured industry folks from the media and travel agent worlds and gave me the opportunity to catch up with one my favorite new journalist friends — GoNomad.com blogger and writer extraordinaire Kent St. John.

I also connected with delightful travel & lifestyle writer Jean Tang, just back from a month-long stint in Paris. We quickly bonded over our mutual love for Australia (like me, she spent five months as a Sydney resident) and I told her about my client Tourism Queensland’s exciting Best Job In The World campaign, which has generated worldwide media attention and 11,000+ applicants so far.

Joining us at our lively table were veteran Daily News editor Mila André, travel PR and writing maven Meryl Pearlstein and freelance writer Jeryl Brunner. Conversation flowed freely as we talked about the appeal of mingling at gallery exhibits in NYC and the joys of doing what you love for a living.

One of the biggest joys for me — regularly encountering smart, talented women as excited as I am about travel, and about living in the world’s greatest city.

A Visit to Hamilton Island’s Qualia

Sunday night, I joined about 40 journalists from across the globe along with Tourism Queensland’s executive staff for dinner at Qualia, Hamilton Island’s newest luxury resort.

Set on 30 private acres (gated access is restricted to guests only), Qualia’s 60 pavilions feature jaw-dropping island views, modern eco-inspired décor and soothing silence (no kids allowed).

The sense of arrival begins with Qualia’s open air lobby.

During the cocktail hour there, I enjoyed Champagne and a selection of hot and cold hors d’oeuvres (including kangaroo with fruit chutney and the best fried shrimp I’ve ever had), and learned more about Hamilton Island from CEO Glenn Bourke.

Glenn told me and San Francisco-based freelance writer Kristin Luna about the Oatley family, Hamilton Island’s owners. Known for their philanthropy and great wines (Rosemount is their signature label), the Aussie clan has invested $300 million on Hamilton over the last five years. Still in the works — a new yacht club and golf course.

Everyone at the dinner was buzzing about Tourism Queensland’s new Best Job In The World campaign, the destination’s just-launched global search for an Island Caretaker who will help spread the word about the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef.

During a delicious three-course meal, TQ’s Wendy Levy and I talked about how exciting it is to be part of such an innovative campaign that is reaching people around the world.

Expecting her second child this spring, Wendy told me how she met her husband through an unusual Aussie improv group called Theatre Sports. Her tale reaffirmed my belief that having fun — especially in an unconventional way — is a surefire approach to finding Mr. Right.

At this particular moment, though, I’m happy to be footloose and fancy free. It’s impossible to be anything but when you’re experiencing the wonders Down Under!

Coming up…my first-ever snorkeling adventure and the island hopping in Queensland continues.

Greetings from Queensland, Australia. It’s been a whirlwind since my Virgin Blue flight touched down here yesterday in Hamilton Island, one of the 600 Islands of the Great Barrier Reef and the largest inhabited island in the breathtaking Whitsundays.

Led by our gracious Tourism Queensland escort Kylie, a group of 8 U.S. journalists and I drove by buggy through Hamilton Island’s winding hills to the aptly named Reef View Hotel. Upon entering my room, this was the view that greeted me…

I had just enough time to change and freshen up before rejoining the group and heading up to One Tree Hill, for a 360 degree look around.

Next, we toured Blue Pearl, a three-bedroom duplex home with sweeping island views, for a Q&A session with Tourism Queensland’s dynamic CEO Anthony Hayes.

It was then that we revealed to the journalists Tourism Queensland’s groundbreaking new campaign — The Best Job In The World. The destination has just kicked off a global search to finding a winning candidate for the position.

What exactly is The Best Job In The World? Tourism Queensland’s newly created role of Island Caretaker. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime — six months to live and work on the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef.

The perks? In addition to accommodations on Hamilton Island at Blue Pearl, a $100k salary and the chance to share what it’s like to live above the reef by blogging and video diaries.

I’ve been here only a day and can definitely say the winning applicant will have no shortage of material. Majestic and unspoiled island beauty, an array of activities for the adventurous, and 2,000 welcoming locals.
