Readers of this blog know that, when it comes to dating, I’m a big believer in the nothing ventured, nothing gained mentality. That’s the mindset with which I’ve approached my recent return to online dating, via OkCupid.
Upon logging into my account for the first time in months, I discovered a few unread messages. One of them, sent in October, was from Inigo, a sweet, cute native of Spain. Though I wasn’t sure how or if he would respond to my (very) belated reply, I took a chance and emailed him.
Much to my surprise and delight, Inigo answered right away. Even better, he wasted no time asking me out for coffee. I’ve never been a proponent of the notion that, just because you connect online, you have to engage in a prescribed amount of communicating before graduating to an actual date. And I was happy to find that Inigo felt the same way.
Over hot chocolate at a cozy Viennese coffee bar in the East Village, Inigo and I fell into easy conversation about the charms of his native Madrid, the dizzying competitiveness of dating in NYC and, yes, the familiarity of his moniker due to a certain beloved 80’s film.
“Have you seen The Princess Bride?” I eventually asked, unable to resist the temptation any longer.
Inigo smiled knowingly.
“Si,” he said. “My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!”
We both laughed. A guy who can appreciate an 80’s classic and not mind quoting from it (for what was probably the 400th time in his life)? It doesn’t get much better than that on a first date.
Coming up…a delicious Valentine’s Day giveaway and a powerful lesson from girls night out.
